Weird but wonderful – Pentecost

Have you heard of Pentecost? It’s a big celebration in the Church year, like Christmas and Easter, but most people don’t know about it...no cards in the shops...no Pentecost chocolates or presents... no day off work. Maybe because it’s such a weird and wonderful story told in the bible book of Acts chapter 2... take a look and see.

The whole Easter story is weird and wonderful when you think about it. His friends see Jesus die on the cross and buried in a grave but on Easter day they see Jesus is alive

which is weird but wonderful...

After Easter the risen Jesus meets his friends for 40 days before he goes back to be with God in heaven – 500 people see him at one time - he even eats meals with them which is weird but wonderful...

40 days after Easter Jesus ascends to God in heaven and asks us to carry on his work. On Ascension Day he just disappears from his friends’ sight, hidden by clouds, which is weird but wonderful...

Jesus promises to be with us always even though we can’t see him anymore. He promises his Spirit will guide, comfort and grow in us his gifts of love, joy, peace, gentleness, generosity, kindness, patience, faithfulness and self control, which is weird but wonderful...

50 days after Easter Jesus’ friends are together in a house in Jerusalem. A noise like rushing wind fills the whole house. Flames rest on everyone’s heads but no one gets burned. Everyone speaks in languages they don’t know, which is weird but wonderful...

‘Holy Spirit...stir us, strengthen us, teach and inspire us;

to live your love with generosity and joy,

imagination and courage; for the sake of your world and in the name of Jesus. Amen.’ (Living God’s Love prayer)
